Ispirato a uno degli ultimi sonetti di Stéphane Mallarmé, il Quartetto "cette nuit" (composto per il Quartetto Anthos) appartiene a un più ampio ciclo cameristico dedicato al poeta francese. In questo caso lo spunto è offerto dalla svolta interiore descritta nelle due terzine del sonetto ove, dopo la disperazione per l'infrangersi di un Sogno salvifico e il risentimento verso false credenze consolatorie, si apre nel cuore della notte cosmica la luce del genio creativo, gioiosa e roteante come l'accendersi di un "astro in festa". La struttura bipartita, intessuta da citazioni tratte da Fetes di Debussy, si regge sul filo comune tracciato da un'ideale linea di orizzonte (rappresentata dalla nota re) inizialmente affidata al pianoforte, mentre gli archi scintillano filamenti di stelle, e poi ripresa ed esaltata dagli archi, mentre lo strumento a tastiera sorge radioso illuminando l'oscurità. Dopo l'apparizione del Poeta che incendia con il suo fuoco l'Universo, una sottile scia luminosa sigla nella Coda il cammino utopico di chi, cercando il nuovo e proiettandosi nel futuro, riapre una dimensione metafisica che contribuisce all'interpretazione del mistero della vita.

Inspired one of the last Mallarmé's sonnets, this work, composed for the Anthos Quartet, is part of a chamber cycle dedicated to the French poet. It refers to the inner change described in the two tercets in which, after the despair for a broken dream of salvaition and the resentment against false consolatory beliefs, the cosmic night is joyfully lighted by the creative genius, like a festive star. The bipartite structure, punctuated by quotations of Debussy's Fêtes, is marked by an ideal horizon line, the D played firstly by the piano, on the "stellar" filaments of the other instruments, and then by the strings, while the piano seems arise like a radiating star in the darkness. After the apparition of the Poet who burns the Universe with his flames, a subtle bright wake in the Coda marks the utopic route towards a new future world, a metaphysical dimension that gives its contribution to the interpretation of the mistery of life.
